Reading Out of Genre

It’s no secret that I’m a crime fiction girl. I love the rollercoaster ride of twists and turns, the suspense, the thrill of the chase. This year one of my reading aims is to alternate a thriller with an alternative genre. Whether I will achieve this is questionable, but an interesting challenge all the same. I’m currently absorbed in Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (yes, I know I’m behind the curve, but that’s quite normal for me). Over Christmas I read The Sound of Laughter by Peter Kay and picked up a Jodi Picoult to peruse over the next few months, along with a few non-fiction books I have lined up as potential research for my next novel.

That said, although I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series (and re-reading them years later with my daughter), apart from the odd Terry Pratchett, few fantasy books line my shelves. It’s a genre I rarely touch. However, last year I read the debut novel, Shadows of the Realm, by Dionne Lister. OK, so Dionne is a friend and fellow writer – the urge to buy the book came out of a combination of obligation, curiosity and support – but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. So much so, that I plan to give it another go this year.

Dionne’s book is currently on sale from Jan 8-22. Even if you are not a fantasy reader, I urge you to give it a go, you won’t be disappointed. Here is the blurb from the author:

Shadows of the Realm is an epic fantasy for teens and adults. Join Bronwyn and Blayke, two young realmists, and their animal companions, as they are forced to leave the only home they’ve ever known to undertake a dangerous journey towards Vellonia, city of the dragons.

The gormons are invading, slipping through the corridors between realms, and they want blood, lots of Talian blood. Will the young realmists learn enough of the Second Realm magic to prevail, or will everything they love be destroyed?

The first book in The Circle of Talia series is on sale from the 8th to the 22nd of January for the bargain price of $1.99 on Smashwords, Amazon UK and Amazon COM. Grab it and escape into an original and enchanting world filled with mystery, danger, dragons and adventure; you won’t be sorry!
