Author Interview: Emma Jones

I’ve been delighted to meet a number of very talented Northamptonshire writers recently and today I would like to share an interview with local author and very dear friend, Emma Jones.

Hi Emma. Thanks for joining us. Without giving too much away, tell us about your latest book?

I’ve just completed the first draft of the sequel to The Awakening. I’ve been through it and removed obvious errors and sent it to 4 beta readers to get their opinions. It picks up where the first book ends. It is slighter darker as I’ve introduced another character.  I hope people will love the end which I actually wrote early on in the writing process as it came to me in a flash of inspiration and I loved it.

Where do your ideas come from?

The Awakening came from my love of the vampire genre.  I loved it long before Twilight emerged and thought it was time we had a few more UK YA vampire books on the market.  Although it is paranormal the friendship structure is loosely based on my own and is set in my home town.  I also write children’s stories and the ideas come from my own children Lily & Luke.

Who is your most fascinating character, and why?

In my book I think Lauren is my most fascinating character.  She makes a startling discovering and you see how she tackles this and develops. I think she is very likeable and her reactions understandable & believable.

Are any of your stories set in Northamptonshire?

Yes The Awakening is set in Northamptonshire.

What is your writing routine and how do you balance your writing with your other commitments?

I do not have a routine.  I wrote most of The Awakening on maternity leave and would write when my son was napping.  Book 2 has been written in the evenings once the children are in bed.  I had a period of 6-8 weeks where I didn’t write a thing due to work and family commitments but then had a splurge in one week and wrote 17,000 words.

What can readers expect from you next, and when can they expect it?

The sequel to The Awakening is next but I do not have a set time frame although it will definitely be this year. I have an idea for a teen book based on three 15-16 year old friends doing their GCSE’s and problems with bullying, growing up and a family bereavement but I’m not sure the current format works as its written entirely in text messages, a secret blog and Facebook updates.  I need to have a think and get a second opinion.

Thanks for having me on your blog and your time.

You’re welcome, Emma. It’s been a pleasure. Here is that all important blurb:

Do you believe in vampires? Ghosts? The supernatural world?  Meet Lauren who instantly clicks with Gavin at a friend’s BBQ. Everything goes well until Lauren starts to experience strange things and hears a weird voice. It seems like a warning but from what? Lauren eventually makes the startling discovery that Gavin is a vampire and it has profound consequences for herself. The arrival of Daniel makes things even more confusing for Lauren as she is warned he is bad news from a ghostly source. Laurens life is turned upside down as things she thought were myths and legends become real and she struggles to cope with everything she has discovered.

Will Lauren and Gavin’s relationship survive and what about the mysterious Daniel?
